Introducing Advent
When we chose the Advent materials back in August, I had no idea how appropriate they would be for this season. We recognized that they would be good but I think they are more so now. Our theme is Words for the Beginning with blessings for each week that are both simple and profound. Advent marks the beginning of the Christian year so it is a new beginning. We are reminded of the beginning for Mary and Joseph that was both marked with danger and awe. We are heading into a new calendar year and a new beginning.
On the first Sunday of Advent, Dec. 1, we will be reminded like Mary was that “You are a blessing.” You may not always feel like a blessing but you are. The second week, we study Ruth and Naomi and this understanding that “We Can’t Go Alone.” We need each other for this journey called life and faith. John the Baptist will remind us in the third week that we all can “Do the good that is Yours to do.” And on our fourth week of Advent, Joseph’s story will remind us that “Hope is worth the risk.” All of this will culminate in our Christmas Eve services where we will proclaim “Love knows your name” once again.
We will kick off the season this Sunday Nov. 24th at 3 pm in the Great Hall for our Advent workshop. This is an intergenerational activity for all those who love to craft or to make things for your home. You are also invited to create gifts for our homebound members reminding them that we have not forgotten them and that they are loved. Bring a snack to share with the group and have a good time. I grew up in a church that had an Advent workshop and each year as I hang ornaments on the tree, I am reminded of those nights making many of our ornaments with my children. It is a beautiful blessing to me and I hope that we can provide that kind of continued memory creating for you and your families.
United Methodist Discipleship Ministries created a resource to help us create sacred space with our families for Thanksgiving. Click here to read the article.
Also, the sign ups to help decorate for Advent & Christmas are going slow so please sign up today. You only have to do one task and then you can leave for lunch. Click here to help.
Finally, I give thanks to be your pastor and to serve this amazing place. Have a joyous Thanksgiving!
